How to Boost Your Buying Power: Securities Based Lending
TL;DR: You can borrow money using your stock as collateral. This is another way to finance a purchase or a backup source of emergency funding. Rates usually float daily, and you usually need at least ~$100k in assets to get this going. Professionals in finance often use a ton of leverage their deals, their strategies, and ultimately their profits. For example, a long/short hedge fund can have aggregate portfolio sizes that are orders of magnitude bigger than the actual margin they need to post (i.e. how much money they put in, their initial cash investment). However, this is not limited to only big companies and the ultra, ultra wealthy! Much…

Check your mortgage rates
TL;DR: Rates have fallen Usually mortgage rates follow the 10-year bond rate, which has fallen a lot recently. If you’re fortunate enough to be able to think about this, it may be time to ask for some quotes. Even if mortgage rates haven’t completely kept up with the fall recently, there’s a chance they may in the future, and it may be time to start thinking about that. That’s whether you’re buying or refinancing. Happy Rate’ing, TheJKW

Covid-19
TL;DR: Social distancing is important. This week I’m going to take some time to acknowledge the current state of the world, as states in the US are beginning to shut down. As of this writing, the death rate across the world is 13% (high risk individuals include older folks and those with pre-existing conditions). While the Coronavirus poses a low risk to most of the healthy population, the infection is extremely contagious. Even if you are not at high risk, anyone can be a silent carrier with no symptoms and spread the disease. Please, for the sake of yourself and others, stay home when you can. As for your finances…

Ask for your $$ back
TL;DR: Don’t be afraid to ask for $$ back when you want to dispute credit card charges. For the most part, it seems like most cards put 0 liability on consumers for charges they aren’t responsible for. Definitely when there are fraudulent charges, you have to contact your credit card company to help you out. But if you also simply feel like a business short-changed you on some aspect, like if they overcharged for something or promised you a different service, call the company. If they’re no help, you can call your credit card company and sometimes they can dispute it for you. Citi double cash is especially fantastic about…

$1k a month?
TL;DR: for your chance to win Presidential candidate Andrew Yang is offering 10 “freedom dividends” paying $1k a month for a year, to promote his UBI agenda. Look, this is not necessarily an endorsement. I’m just saying this guy’s giving out free money. Happy Freedom’ing! TheJKW

Just download the app
TL;DR: So many stores and chains have a loyalty program. Just go look for it. Whenever you’re shopping in some big chain and think – do you they have a loyalty program? They probably do. And if you go a lot, it’s almost certainly worth getting into their rewards program. My first thing is to just search the brand in the app store. Next I google if they have a referral bonus, and Google for them. That’s it. Happy Earning, TheJKW

Applying to multiple credit cards at the same time
TL;DR: Don’t do it. I think it can be tempting to want to apply to multiple credit cards on your credit card wish list at the same time, especially if you’ve been pre-approved and/or your credit score is high enough. Speaking from personal experience, I tried this once where I applied to 3 on the same night. I got instantly approved to my first one. I got approved after a couple days to my second one, with a significant cut in my credit limit. My third credit card was approved after a week and the credit limit was just $500. My credit score also cratered 40 points to a place…

Equifax Data Breach Settlement
TL;DR: A quick $125. This settlement is for anyone affected by the data breach (you probably were). You can first check out if you were affected, then ask a for a check. If you were seriously affected, you can also file claims for losses in time or money. Shout-out to my co-worker DRE for finding this! Happy Settling, TheJKW

Building your wealth: a model
TL;DR: Income -> Tax -> Investments -> Expenditures -> Cash back/Savings When people rely just on some get-rich-quick investment to build their wealth, or when people think that all it takes to become wealthy is cutting down expenses, they are deluding themselves. Wealth is about how financially sustainable your situation is, and has to be calculated holistically. There are 5 major pieces we’ll look at. When you analyze your own financial situation, spend some time to think: where could I improve? Where would my time be most well spent? How do I want my individual wealth chain to look in 5, 10 years, or at retirement? Income: Not investment income,…
