More on the 5% series: Target

TL;DR: Target’s REDcard lets you save 5% on Target purchases. If you’re anything like me and you have a Target nearby that you spend too much money at… Target’s REDcard will let you feel 5% better about buying all those things you get there. You can use this on top of the Target app, where you could receive more savings. Just one more card to add to boost your cash back 🙂 Happy Target’ing! TheJKW

More in the 5% Series: Gas

TL;DR: The Fort Knox Visa Platinum Card gives 5% back on gas purchases. Continuing with complementary credit cards that give 5% purchases, the Fort Knox Visa Platinum card gives 5% back on gas. There’s also no annual fee. For the average American who spends over $2000 in gas a year, that’s $100 back! It also gives 1% back on grocery purchases, but hopefully in those cases you’ll be using another card, like Citi Double Cash. The only caveat is that it seems pretty hard to get; you have to have had few credit inquiries within the last 6 months/2 years. But hey, if you plan accordingly this could be a nice…

    Dosh: Another Savings App :)

TL;DR: Download Dosh and connect a credit card to start passively earning cash back! Just like the Drop and SPENT Money apps previously mentioned, Dosh is another app where you passively earn cash back as you spend. They seem to have a focus on restaurants, but do offer a wide selection of stores as well. You also start off with $5 just for getting the app! Dosh does, however, clash with Yelp CashBack and any other apps that run on Mogul in the background. You can only link your credit cards to one of these at a time – so if you also have those, I’d suggest strategically linking cards to different apps…

    Samsung Pay

TL;DR: Pay for your purchases through Samsung Pay for both convenience and extra cash back. There’s been a growing trend to use your phones to pay instead of physical credit cards. The most popular programs have been Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. They’re great because we’re moving towards having everything in one place, so maybe one day you won’t have to bring your wallet around all the time! However, the best of these programs is Samsung Pay due to its rewards program. You get $5 back after your first purchase, but after that you can accumulate points. At a certain point, you get 20 points per transaction (which…

Getting 5% Back with Credit Cards

TL;DR: Maximize on 5% back opportunities with the Discover, Chase, and US Bank cards.  In the Starter Guide, we talked about getting 5% back on rotating categories with the Discover card. However, there are many similar cards with 5% categories. You can get them all to maximize your opportunities! 1 The Discover Card As mentioned before, this gives 5% back on rotating categories each calendar quarter. You’ll see categories such as restaurants, Amazon, Target, gas and groceries, etc. You’ll also get double the cash back your first year (i.e. 10% on those categories) as well as $20 every year if you’re a student. 2 The Chase Freedom Credit Card This…

    Harris Poll Online: ShopTracker

TL;DR: Earn $3 a month for Selling Your Amazon Spending Habits ShopTracker is a program (through the Harris Poll App) that tracks your Amazon spending habits, and in return, gives you $3 in (virtual) prepaid Visa cards. You can download through your app store on your phone and sign up through email. These kinds of programs are controversial because – well – what’re they doing with your data? I personally find it somewhat innocuous but obviously up to you to decide. I’m cool with collecting $3 a month for doing nothing. You can find out more about it here. Happy passive earning, TheJKW

Credit Cards: Wells Fargo Propel Card

TL;DR: The Wells Fargo Propel Card adds the ability to get 3% back on Uber/Lyft. To complement the benefits of the recommended credit cards in the starter guide, Wells Fargo came out with a new credit card that gives 3% back on ridesharing services (Uber, Lyft, etc…), gas, eating out/ordering in, travel, and popular streaming services. Rumor has it that when points are redeemed through Wells Fargo’s Go Far Rewards, you can stretch your points 50% more. The card also has a $0 annual fee, and a 30k point bonus ($300) after spending $3000 in the first month. Seems like a pretty sweet deal to me. Just one note: seems…

    Uber: Get More Rewards

TL;DR: Shop Your Way lets you get $2 in Sears Credit per Uber ride. Passively. Shop Your Way is the app mainly for Sears that tries to reward Sears shoppers. However, you can link your Uber account and get $2 for every Uber ride. The best part is that this doesn’t conflict with any other stream of passive income from the starter guide, and only requires you to go to their website/app to shop and redeem your points. There are other ways of earning in the program, including linking cards to earn cash back in certain stores (although it seems to me it overlaps with the Yelp Cashback program and…
